Carenet acquires Response BPO to boost global healthcare reach

Carenet Health, a Texas-based company specializing in patient engagement services, has announced its acquisition of South Africa-based Response BPO. The move is positioned to expand Carenet’s global capabilities in healthcare outsourcing, addressing the growing demand for scalable and cost-effective healthcare solutions.

Strengthening Global Healthcare Operations

This strategic acquisition enables Carenet to enhance its ability to serve healthcare payers and providers who are grappling with rising costs, workforce shortages, and increasing consumer expectations in the healthcare industry. According to a press release, the partnership significantly extends Carenet’s global footprint while incorporating a high-performing operations center in South Africa, a rapidly growing hub for business process outsourcing (BPO).

"The deal dramatically expands Carenet’s global footprint, adds a high-performance delivery hub in one of the world’s fastest-growing business process outsourcing markets, and significantly strengthens its ability to deliver empathetic, affordable, and clinically excellent care at scale", the company noted.

South Africa: A Strategic Choice

South Africa’s competitive advantages, including a large English-speaking workforce and lower operational costs, have made it an attractive destination for global outsourcing providers. The country offers access to highly educated talent at a cost that is approximately 70% lower than onshore delivery. Carenet’s acquisition of Response BPO taps into this cost-efficient talent pool, reinforcing its ability to deliver high-quality healthcare outsourcing services.

Technology Integration and AI-Driven Engagement

A key benefit of the acquisition is the integration of Response BPO’s clients into Carenet’s broader technology ecosystem, which includes its AI-powered Intelligent Engagement platform. This advanced technology supports more efficient patient engagement, allowing the combined organization to meet the diverse needs of healthcare providers and payers across multiple regions, including the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Philippines.

"This is a game-changing win-win for our clients and our teams", said John Erwin, chief executive officer (CEO) of Carenet. "Response realizes the advantage of Carenet’s deep clinical roots and industry-leading patient engagement technology. Carenet gains a high-performing, healthcare-focused operation in South Africa that is growing fast and led by truly innovative people who know how to support client needs."

Expanding Capacity and Geographic Reach

The acquisition also bolsters Response BPO’s ability to scale up its operations under Carenet’s global infrastructure while maintaining its base of operations in Durban, South Africa. This partnership is expected to enhance pricing flexibility, expand workforce capacity, and improve service delivery across healthcare markets.

"There are many BPO companies out there, but none as deeply embedded in U.S. healthcare as Carenet", said Jiri van Hintum, founder of Response BPO. He added that the acquisition connects both companies to "a larger healthcare network with incredible clinical capabilities, strong technology investments, additional geographies, and proven impact at scale."

A Broader Trend in Healthcare Outsourcing

The deal reflects a larger industry trend in which healthcare outsourcing providers are combining clinical expertise with AI-driven platforms and leveraging geographically diverse delivery hubs to transform their services. Carenet’s expansion highlights the growing importance of strategic acquisitions in gaining competitive advantages through scale, technology integration, and global workforce distribution.

As healthcare providers continue to seek innovative ways to deliver cost-effective and responsive care, Carenet’s acquisition of Response BPO positions the company as a key player in driving healthcare transformation on a global scale.
